meet the political cartoonist turn author
about tim o'bree
At the tender age of 12, Tim began selling cartoons and political charicatures to his local newspaper, the Gladstone Observer. He would negotiate his first pay rise six months later, when lifting his selling price from $8 - $10 for an A3 charicature.
At thirteen Tim was given the opportunity to meet his then idol in the Editorial cartooning game, Rod Emmerson, who was, without doubt, Australia's premier political funny man.
Sounding ever so exciting at that age, Rod, who was likely riled by my barrage of questions, informed me of how dealing with death or harm threats was one of the most challenging things he had encountered. I was hooked.
At the age of 17, Tim joined the Navy for a brief stint, but was quick to realize his ship was heading in the wrong direction.
At 18, Tim wrote, illustrated and published two full colour action comic books. Both would achieve Australian distribution. The second issue would also win a distribution contract in the US. The books, although not successful, would bring about a shift in Tim's thinking, which found creative word play and writing funded a similar use of his imagination as drawing.
A little over six years and several girl friends later, Tim would return to the exact office he had visited years earlier and replace Rodd Emmerson as daily editorial cartoonist for an APN newspaper. He would become the youngest professional cartoonist in Australia at the age of 24.
Taking several months to find his pen style in the fickle industry, Tim came to settle of loose, but rather detailed style that would mark his territory.
Less than a year into the gig, Tim finally came to taste that which he had spent many a day dream practising. His first death threat.
Certainly not handling the situation as he had in his gladiator style visions, Tim's controversial and provocative political cartoons would ensure this would not stand an isolated case for too long.
Rising to peer notice, Tim would take two of the final three nominations for Best Editorial Cartoonist in 2005 and would be awarded the extremely prestigious Walkley magazine front cover (pictured here somewhere).
Leaving the newspaper a year later, after a falling out with an incoming editor, Tim would leave the newspaper and join an independant free local newspaper.
General Manager of the broadsheet paper, which was printed in full colour, Tim oversaw the Weekend Choice's growth to over 40,000 copies delivered free to homes. Withdrawing his services a year later, the paper was broken into three individual sections.
Moving into property developemnt, Tim would then join with another to open a small chain of three restaurants. Witnessing the brunt of GFC first hand, Tim joined the so many others who would suffer financial meltdown and lose, what was, essentially everything.
Taking some time to regather himself, Tim returns to the world of makebelieve, bringing to reality the Galaxy Battle League concept.
Releasing part one with five months of buying a notepad, Tim is set to release the second installment by May 2013 and will attempt to release another part each year until all eight are done.
Following the Galaxy Battle League, Tim has a pre scheduled list of other projects including a nine part epic fantasy and an animated sitcom project which has been bounced around for some time now.
Tim has two beautiful young children from a previous marriage whom are everything to him.

***********TM - 9 parts (2016-2020) (not Galaxy Battle League)
Before embarking of the Galaxy Battle League series, Tim was challenged with a most pressing question. Which of his two epics to start first. Although well serviced in the public twisting of words as a political daily cartoonist, Tim chose to test the unknown waters of public writing with his least favoured futuristic tale.
This 9 part novel series is a near lifetimes work and simply leaves no speculative fiction rule un-broken.

Animated Adult sitcom - (Co-op concept project in progress.)
Tim's cartooning experience and background are well served with this quirky side project. Under way for almost two years now, this animated adult sitcom is a cross between the Simpson's and Seinfield. The script for season one is written and more thirty-two characters have been created and penciled in detail.
From the authors mouth, "I have never laughed so much at my own words and I produced alot of funny cartoons in my day."

With such a structured few years to come, there's little time to be ill, nor is there justice in sitting here detailing this... back to work, Tim.
